Pneumatosis cystoides coli

Left and Center: Nodular, polypoid mucosal lesions discovered in an 84 year-old woman undergoing colonoscopy for evaluation of constipation. She was otherwise asymptomatic. Many of the lesions were erythematous.

Right: Biopsy revealed the lesions to have an internal cystic appearance, suggestive of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.

The diagnosis was confirmed histologically:

61 year-old asymptomatic man undergoing routine high-risk colon screening in view of a family history of colonic carcinoma. Colonoscopy revealed soft, benign-appearing nodular lesions. Biopsies confirmed the suspicion of pneumatosis.

52 year-old asymptomatic woman undergoing colonoscopy for average risk colon screening. Numerous soft polypoid lesions were seen scattered throughout the colon. Biopsies were consistent with pneumatosis.
