Vocal Cords

Although they are not part of the gastrointestinal tract, endoscopy affords an opportunity to visualize the vocal cords.

Left: 91 year-old man with complaints of chronic pyrosis and the recent development of both dysphagia and hoarseness. Endoscopy (performed for evaluation of dysphagia) demonstrated mild distal esophagitis and Barrett's disease. However, inspection of the cords revealed carcinoma involving the left cord.

Right: Small smooth vocal cord polyp indicentally noted in a 64 year-old woman undergoing endoscopy for evaluation of abdominal pain.
